Snake: One of the Most Popular Reptile Species
Millions of years ago planet Earth was inhabited by giant reptiles known as dinosaurs. They existed in the Jurassic period (the time of its greatest evolution); however, due to climate change on Planet Earth, probably caused by a meteor crash, they did not survive and became extinct. Even today, bone and egg fossils are found to prove the existence of these great reptiles of the past.
Reptile Information and Key Features
Nowadays, reptiles living on planet Earth are much smaller than their prehistoric ancestors, and can be divided into five classes within their species: crocodilans (crocodiles and alligators, for example, which are commonly found in warm climate regions); turtles (tortoises, jabutis and various types of turtles); the ophidians (they are the snakes and serpents), the saurians (the lizards and chameleons) and the tuatara, this group was the only one left over from the prehistoric group of the reincocephalus (they inhabit only New Zealand).
This animal category is cold-blooded, so they cannot live in low-temperature regions, often inhabiting the hottest places on the planet. In Brazil, for example, we find several species of reptiles, because the climate is predominantly warm, conducive to their adaptation, reproduction and development. In temperate climates such as Britain, however, these animals hibernate in the winter, because if it were different, their blood, which gets the temperature of the environment, could freeze.
These animals mostly lay eggs (oviparous) and they are hatched by the heat generated by the sun. However, there are some types of snakes and lizards that already lay their young formed. About its main physical characteristics, it is worth mentioning that the skin is formed by hard scales and also that many reptiles breathe through the lungs, this also applies to those who live in or near water.
Interesting: In Brazil, there is a valuable work of preservation of a reptile species that almost became extinct. In partnership with Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment), the Pró-Tamar Foundation monitors a thousand kilometers of beach, monitoring reproduction from birth to the development of sea turtles. The Tamar Project is recognized worldwide as an example of work aimed at preserving sea turtles.
Reptile Examples: turtles, tortoises, jabutis, alligators, tracajás, crocodiles, iguanas, lizards, snakes and snakes.
- Reptiles can be found on all continents except Antarctica due to the low temperatures.
Wetland Alligator (Caiman yacare): a reptile very common in the Brazilian Pantanal region.
